Artist's Statement

Wall of Water, ChicagoMy paintings interpret a perception of walls as defensive, protective and ultimately problem-solvers depending on their political, social, personal and historic circumstances. I interpret such walls in a variety of conceptual approaches within the theme of opposites attract.

The subject matter has ranged from Israeli security fences and war- time fronts to psychological barriers of indifference and denial. I have also looked at what remains of historic, but still functioning walls. Specifically the neo classical grandeur of Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin and the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris continue to hold my attention.

Recent work is a series on the walls of familiar contemporary urban spaces. I look at an ever changing process of walls under construction and deconstruction similar that of the stage set with which they could share the short term focus on the grand illusion.

Along with a fascination with walls in my work, I have a continuing interest in landscape painting. In a recent series this has become an exploration of contemporary rural spaces as a complement to that of contemporary urban space. I use a variety of styles which reflect the different “dialogues” I have with every painting when each wall’s story unfolds. Together, these works make up a succession of walls perceived as a means of containing the uncontrollable. This forms a symbiotic relationship inherent in the theme of opposites attract.

It is also part of how I proceed since most paintings are composed with the formal control of the golden mean. With this in place I can add collage and layers of mixed media onto active surfaces as freely as I wish. The materials include acrylic, acrylic medium, spray paint, conte, charcoal, inks, sand, cloth and mylar on grounds of mylar, heavy paper, canvas and wood panel.
